After early recognition with selection of his works for the Archibald and Sulman exhibitions, Robert Finlayson had successful solo shows in Sydney in the late 1960s. After that he stopped actively pursuing exhibition opportunities and practised his art without reference to contemporary trends or expectations. See biography for more info.

It was not until 1994 that his work was shown in public again, with the major retrospective exhibition "A Mirror for Poets" held at the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Following his death a non-selling exhibition "Sub Specie Aeternitatus" was held at the Margot Hardy Gallery, University of Western Sydney in 2002.
